POLICY #100: Internet Acceptable Use

  • This policy is intended to ensure appropriate use of the Internet at this member library.
  • This member library uses a technology protection measure that blocks and/or filters Internet access.
  • Internet users will use only the Library Barcode Number assigned to them by the Library.

I. Minor Use of the Internet (Individuals under the age of 18)

  • Parent or guardian will remain onsite for all minors under the age of 12.
  • Parental approval is required for staff members to disable the filter for minors at each visit.
  • Minors shall not access material that is obscene, pornographic or deemed "harmful to minors."
  • Minors shall not engage in "hacking" or attempts to otherwise compromise system security.
  • Minors shall not engage in any illegal activities on the Internet.
  • Minors should use caution in their use of electronic mail, chat rooms, and other forms of direct electronic communications, as these forms of communication can expose minors to dangerous situations.
  • Minors should never disclose personal information, such as name, school, address, and telephone number to strangers on the Internet.
  • Social media shall not be used in an illegal manner

II. Adult Use of the Internet

  • Adults shall not access material that is obscene or pornographic.
  • Adults shall not engage in "hacking" or attempts to otherwise compromise system security.
  • Adults shall not engage in any illegal activities on the Internet.
  • Social media shall not be used in an illegal manner
  • If requested and within reason, the technology protection measure that blocks and/or filters Internet access may be disabled by a staff member.

Any violation of this policy may result in loss of library-provided access to the Internet or additional disciplinary action. When and where applicable, law enforcement agencies may be involved.
